August 1, 2010
A Schützenfest is a unique German festival part of which involves a target shooting competition by members of the "Schützenverein."  In Bow Valley, NE members of the Bow Valley Park Association Honor Guard take turns firing 30-30 rifles at a wooden bird replica mounted on a tall pole until the bird falls.  The shooter who fells the bird is named "king" and chooses a "queen." The couple reigns until the next festival.

The 1st Bow Valley Schützenfest was organized in 1896 by Willibald Schulte and John Noecker. Today, Bow Valley celebrates it every five years. People from throughout the midwest gather at the festival to celebrate their German heritage. It is one of only a few authentic Schützenfests in the United States,
